About Us

Marliën Barnard

I am a registered clinical psychologist in South Africa with more than 30 years of experience.

I worked in multidisciplinary teams in a psychiatric environment for the last 20 years where I am involved in the development and facilitation of group programs.

My therapeutic approach is systemic & I believe that all healing takes place when consciousness is brought to the inner voice & clients find an authentic expressive channel for the voice that has often been silenced, wounded, suppressed, oppressed, ridiculed, shamed, or in any way compromised.

Internal healing follows when the voice that has been silenced finds powerful authentic expression.

As an artist and musician, I have experienced the restorative healing power of creative self-expression and incorporate creative expression in my therapeutic approach, specifically in group work merging art, poetry and prose writing, meditative techniques, and therapeutic drumming in the therapeutic process.

There are rhythms and patterns in everything that has been created – finding and reconnecting with these internal and external patterns and rhythms makes us feel connected to something predictable and orderly and allows us to breathe, feel calm, and grounded.

Life is often a maelstrom that renders us into chaos and disorder, we live in a reality of beauty and destruction…. when fires blaze through forests, and cyclones tear through the earth’s surface, chaos sweeps through our lives… For every act of destruction, there needs to be an equal act of creation. This act of creation, when the original inner voice emerges, is where we restore the power to be fully conscious and present to fulfill our purpose.

Marliën obtained a BA degree from the University of Pretoria in 1987 majoring in English and French Literature, Psychology and completed her master’s degree in clinical psychology at the University of Johannesburg in 1991 and a Unisa Gr 8 qualification in classical piano and musical theory.  Art has been a form of self-expression and she has received informal art training through the years.
